Our Mission

The Chiaroscuro International Film Series connects global cultures and celebrates the universal human spirit by fostering a deeper understanding of diverse peoples through the power of international cinema.

About the Film Series

Each year from January to March, Chiaroscuro presents five international films tied together by a central theme. All screenings are free and open to the public, thanks to the support of our generous local sponsors.

Films are shown in their original language with English subtitles and include a panel discussion with a film scholar and cultural representative, followed by a casual reception with food and drink.

Join Us at
Wealthy Theatre

Our screenings take place at the historic Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids' Eastown neighborhood. This beautiful venue offers the perfect setting for film lovers to come together and explore new perspectives.

Our History

Founded in 2005 by local educators and artists, Chiaroscuro—meaning “light and shadow”—was inspired by the Toronto International Film Festival and a shared love of global cinema. Led by volunteers, the organization has evolved through different venues while continuing to connect people through film.
